9/5/05 - 9/11/05 K9 Unit assists with the search and recovery in Hancock Co Mississippi in the wake of Hurricane Katrina
Scott Co EMA was contacted by the search coordinator of Hancock MS asking for assistance from the K9 Unit. On Monday Sept 5th along with Butler Co Search and Rescue we traveled down to MS.
Upon arriving we found a high magnitude destruction and disorganization but were finally able to connect with the Search Coordinator and recieve our assignment.
On Tuesday we were joined by two dog teams from Stewart Co TN Search and Rescue and all three teams soon found ourselves working smoothly together. The majority of our search efforts being confined to the Waveland MS area south of the railroad tracks to the beach.
This was a tragedy on such a large scale that could never be totally trained for but all persons attending stepped forward to complete that tasks at hand.

The Scott County Search Dog Team teaches two simple principles: Hug a Tree and the Scent Sponge. What you learn through these programs may save some life-threatening hours if you should ever need to be found.
